MAT 127: Calculus C

Welcome to MAT 127---Calculus C.

This is the final course in the calculus sequence. We cover essential and beautiful tools such as differential equations, sequences and series, power series, and their applications.

Announcements

The Final Exam will take place on Wednesday December 15 from 11:00am to 1:30 pm in ESS 001. (Both section 01 and section 02 will have their final exam in ESS 001.) The final exam will cover all of the material gone over in MAT 127 this semester. You will not be allowed to use a calculator on the final exam. Remember to bring your ID, some scratch paper and some pencils. A practice final exam link appears below. Note that solutions are now posted below for problems in sections 8.4,8.5,8.6. I have recieved thus far (Sunday evening) no response to a request for a room in which to conduct a review session tomorrow. Perhaps I will have to cancell this. Because of this I am including below the solutions to the practice final.

Text

Calculus Concepts and Contexts, Second Edition, by James Stewart

Note that the first edition of this book has very similar text, but the problems are different. If you own the first edition, you'll need to borrow the second edition from a friend or look at it in the library or Math Learning Center in order to do the homework.

Homework

You should read the corresponding section of the text before attending each lecture.

Problems sets will be assigned weekly; check this webpage for the assigments. Each homework set is do at the end of the last class of the following week. Note that the odd-numbered problems have answers in the back of the book. You should nonetheless try and solve these problems without recourse to the answer key, and should write the problem up carefully in your own words even if you have consulted the book for the final answer: always show your work.

It is OK to discuss homework problems with other students. However, each student must write up the homework individually, in his/her own words rather than merely copying someone else's.

Exams

There will be two evening midterm tests, on Monday September 27, and on Tuesday November 9; in both cases the exam is scheduled from 8:30-10:30pm. The final exam will be on Wednesday December 15 from 11:00am to 1:30pm.. Make certain that you wil be available at these times, as there will be no scheduled make-ups for these tests.

Please note that makeup exams are only given for unforseeable circumstances beyond the student's control. In particular, schedule conflicts are not an acceptable reason: please let your lecturer know about any schedule conflicts as soon as possible. You must have ID to be admitted to the exams.

Calculators of any kind will not be permitted in exams. The problems will require pencil and paper reasoning only.

Grading

25% Homework
20% Midterm 1
20% Midterm 2
35% Final Exam

Help

A very useful resource is the Math Learning Center (MLC) in room S240-A of the mathemtics building basement. The hours of the math learning center will be announced soon on this web site. Another useful resource are your lectures and grader, whose office hours are listed above.

Disabilities

If you have a physical, psychological, medical or learning disability that may impact on your ability to carry out assigned course work, please contact the staff in the Disabled Student Services office (DSS), Room 133 Humanities, 632-6748/TDD. DSS will review your concerns and determine, with you, what accommodations are necessary and appropriate. All information and documentation of disability is confidential.
