Professor: Leon Takhtajan
Office: Math Tower 5-116.

Course description: We will discuss, with complete proofs, three classical topics in number theory: Gauss quadratic reciprocity law, Dirichlet theorem on primes in arithmetic progression, and introduction to the theory of modular forms.

Textbook: "A Course in Arithmetic", by Jean-Pierre Serre, Springer-Verlag, 1973. We will also be using another classic "Elements of Number Theory" by Ivan Matveevich Vinogradov, Dover, 1954.

Homework: The homework is a compulsory part of the course. Homework assignments are due each week at the beginning of the Thursday's class.

Grading policy: The final grade will be based on in-class participation, presentations and the homework. Class attendance is a required component of the grade.
