MAT 126 Calculus B

Summer Session II 2009

Announcements

I have entered the course grades on SOLAR. Email me if you would like to discuss your grade. Please understand that I can explain why your grade is what it is, but your grade will only change in the case of a clerical error. I am traveling next week, so I may take a couple of days to reply to your emails.

Here is the practice final exam and the answers.
It is longer and (I believe) harder than the actual exam.

We only covered section 6.2 in class on Thursday 8/6, so only the homework from section 6.2 will be due on Tuesday 8/11. I have updated the syllabus to reflect the new schedule; a few things have been pushed back.

Introduction

This is the second course in Stony Brook's 3 semester Calculus sequence. We will cover the basics of one-variable integral calculus; our main goal we be to understand the definite integral. Grades will be based on homework assignments, quizzes, and a final exam.

Since this course covers a semester's worth of material in 6 weeks, the pace will be much faster than that of a course offered during the fall or spring.

Instructor

Nathaniel Rounds

The best way to get in touch with me is via email: nrounds AT math DOT sunysb DOT edu

I will also hold office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays before class.

Text

Single Variable Calculus, Stony Brook Edition by James Stewart. We will cover chapters 5 and 6 of this book. You can purchase the text at the Barnes and Noble on 5th Ave and 18th St.

It's fine to use an earlier edition of the book, but the exercises may be numbered differently. Make sure you look at a copy of the Stony Brook edition to make sure you are doing the right problems.

Homework

There will we 10 homework assignments, one due each class starting July 15. We will spend the first half hour of each class, from 1:30 until 2, discussing the homework. The day's homework assignment is due at 2pm, at which time we'll take a quiz covering that assignment.

Each student may turn in 2 homework assignments the class after they are due. This allowance for 2 late homework assignments is meant to cover all contingencies.

Quizzes

There will be 10 quizzes, one each class starting June 5. Each quiz will consist of one or two problems which are very similar to problems from the homework due that day. There will be no makeup quizzes. If a student misses a quiz due to unforeseeable circumstances beyond the student's control, then the final exam will count for that quiz.

Extra Credit

There will be a couple of opportunities for extra credit:

1) There will be a final homework assignment with several more difficult problems due the day of the final exam.

2) In addition there may be one or more group assigments to be completed in class.

Each of these extra credit assignments will count as one quiz grade.

Final Exam

There will be a comprehensive final exam in class on Thursday, August 10, starting at 1:30pm.

Calculators will not be allowed on the final.

Grades

20% Homework (2% each assigment)
40% Quizzes (4% each quiz)
40% Final Exam

Syllabus

Homework assignments are due the class after they appear in the table.
