MAT 125: Calculus A

Summer Session I 2008

This is the first course in the 3 semester Calculus sequence. We will cover the basics over one-variable differential calculus; our main goal we be to learn how to compute and apply derivatives. Grades will be based on homework assignments, quizzes, and a final exam.

Announcements

I have entered the course grades on SOLAR. Email me if you would like to discuss your grade.

I will be at Stony Brook Manhattan at 11 am on Thursday, July 10. Come by and we can talk about the practice exam, the exra credit homework assignment, or anything else you like.

Here is the practice final exam and the answers.

The derivative worksheet we did in class on 6/26 will count as a quiz. The final homework assignment, which consists of 5 problems and is due the day of the final, will also count a quiz. This makes a total of 12 quiz grades. Your quiz score will be the sum of all 12 of your quiz grades out of 100. In other words, instead of droping the two lowest quiz grades, I will count the two lowest grades as extra credit.

Text

Single Variable Calculus, Stony Brook Edition by James Stewart.

It's fine to use an earlier edition of the book, but the exercises may be numbered differently. Make sure you look at a copy of the Stony Brook edition to make sure you are doing the right problems.

Homework

There will we 10 homework assignments, one due each class starting June 5. We will spend the first half hour of each class, from 1:30 until 2, discussing the homework. The day's homework assignment is due at 2pm, at which time we'll take a quiz covering that assignment. Late homework will not be accepted.

The only way to learn calculus is by doing calculus, so it is important that you attempt every homework problem.

Quizzes

There will be 10 quizzes, one each class starting June 5. Each quiz will consist of one or two problems which are very similar to problems from the homework due that day. There will be no makeup quizzes. If a student misses a quiz due to unforeseeable circumstances beyond the student's control, then the final exam will count for that quiz.

Final Exam

There will be a comprehensive final exam in class on Thursday, July 10, starting at 1:30pm.

Calculators will not be allowed on the final.

Grades

20% Homework (2% each assigment)
40% Quizzes (4% each quiz)
