MAT 311 NUMBER THEORY SPRING 2005

Academic Calendar.

MAT 311: We will study the elementary aspects of the theory of natural numbers.

Prerequisites: MAT 200 (C or higher) AND either MAT 312, 313 or 318 (C or higher). Or permission of the instructor.

Textbook: H. Davenport, The Higher Arithmetic; 7th edition, 1999, Cambridge University Press. To order visit uk.cambridge.org/.

Grade: Midterm I = 25%, Midterm II =25%, Final = 30%, Homework = 20%. Maximum scores: Midterms 1 and 2: 250pts each; Homework 200pts, 4 homeworks, 50pts each. Final 300pts. Total maximum: 1000pts. The numerical grade will be converted to a final letter grade only AFTER the final test has been graded. However, after each midterm an approximate letter grade will be given to you.

Schedule of exams. Be sure to be available on those days and times: Midterm I: TH 3/1, in class; Midterm II: TH 4/7, in class.

Final: Handed out on TH May 5 in class. DUE TU May 10, 9am (sharp!) in my office (5-108).

Office Hours: TH: 11-12 Room P-143. By appointment only also on TH: 9:45-11 and 12-12:45 Room 5-108.

Homework: will be assigned regularely in class. Late homework will not be accepted. The homework must be stapled, legible and succinct.

HMK 1 (Due on TH FEB 3 IN CLASS): p.215 and 216: 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05, 1.06, 1.07, 1.08, 1.11.

HMK 2 (Due on TH MARCH 3 IN CLASS): p.217: 1.15, 1.16, 1.19, 1.20, 1.21, 1.22, 1.23, 1.24

HMK 3 (Due on TU April 5 IN CLASS): p.217-: 2.04, 2.05, 2.06, 2.14, 2.16, 2.22, 2.23, 2.25.

HMK 4 (Due TU May 5 IN CLASS) : p.219-220: 3.03, 3.04, 3.05, 3.07, 3.19, 3.22, 3.24, 3.26.
