Homework. Homework will be assigned and collected each week. Homework assignments will be handed out in class, and a due date will be indicated on each assignment. NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. Homework is due at the BEGINNING of class. In addition, you will be called upon to present your solutions to the homework problems to each other. You will be graded on both the written and the oral presentations of your solutions.
One of the objectives for the course will be to develop your mathematical communication skills, both in writing and in oral presentations. This includes informal class discussions and group work, as well as more formal presentations in class and written assignments. Asking questions and explaining things to others, both in and out of class, is one of the best ways to improve your understanding of the material. This course is meant to be an environment in which everyone is comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and offering good guesses and ideas.
On any assignments, be sure to give acknowledgement where it is due. This includes listing your collaborators and your references, even if you write up the ideas in your own words. Failure to do so is considered plagiarism and is a violation of the university's Code of Academic Conduct.
Attendance. Attendance in class is expected and required. You are responsible for all announcements and assignments made at each class, whether you are present or not.
Grading and Exams. The course grade will be based equally on your written homework, presentations of homework problems in class, two midterms, and a final exam. The first midterm will be March 2. The second midterm will be on April 6.
Special Needs. If you have any condition such as a physical or mental disability which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as I have outlined it, please notify me in the first two weeks of the course so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
