Phone: (631) 632-8277
Office: Math 4-115
Class: Tuesdays at 9:50 am in Old Chemistry 138
Course website: The course website is http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~ksir/mat160.
Course description: This course aims to help students sharpen their problem solving skills and their ability to formulate and express mathematical ideas, through challenging (and hopefully entertaining) puzzles and problems.
Textbook: There is no required textbook for this course.
Homework: Homework is an essential part of the course. A problem set will be assigned each week. You will be expected to think about all of these problems and come up with ideas on how to tackle them. You are also required to submit a complete written solution to one of the problems (or a description of your ideas if you have no complete solutions). YouÕre strongly encouraged to collaborate on the problems, but you must write down your solutions yourself. You should be prepared to describe and discuss these ideas and solutions in class. Note: the problem sets will be posted on the course website (see above) each week after class, so internet access is essential for this course.
Grading: MAT 160 is a 1-credit course with S/U grading. Grades will be assigned based entirely on effort, which will be measured by class attendance and participation together with effort shown on homework. Attendance will be taken; missing more than 3 classes will automatically get you a U grade. There will be no exams.
Students with Disabilities: If you have a physical, psychological, medical, or learning disability
that may affect your ability to carry out assigned course work, you are
strongly urged to contact the staff in the Disabled Student Services (DSS)
office: Room 133 in the Humanities Building; 632-6748/TDD. DSS will review your
concerns and determine, with you, what accommodations are necessary and
appropriate. All information and documentation of disability is confidential.
