Problem Set 3: hand in one problem Tuesday, October 8.
Instructions: Think about all four problems, and come up with some
ideas about how to solve them. Then choose one of the problems and write
up a careful solution. Your solution should be written so that it would
convince a skeptical classmate.
1. Suppose you have a seven minute timer and a fifteen minute timer.
Can you time any whole number of minutes with these two timers? How?
2. Suppose you have an eight minute timer and a ten minute timer. Can
you time any even number of minutes with these two timers? How? Why
can you not time any odd number of minutes?
3. Suppose you have a nine minute timer and a fifteen minute timer.
What numbers of minutes can you time with these timers, and why?
4. What amounts of postage can you make using only three cent and five
cent stamps?
