WELCOME TO MAT 126
Calculus B

Spring 2003

Description: MAT 126 is a course devoted to integration. The contents can be divided into 3 parts, the first one aiming at the definition of integral and at the conceptual understanding of its meaning. The second part focuses on the actual evaluation of given integrals. Finally the last part consists of various applications of integrals to problems from geometry and physics. The prerequisite is a good working knowledge of the material seen in Calculus A. Particularly important is familiarization with the notion of limit and ability to compute derivatives.

Course Syllabus, Homework assignments and places of exams

Homework: Homework will be assigned every week in the recitations and collected in the recitations of the following week. Students enrolled in LEC 3 (for which there is no recitation) will have homework assigned in the Tuesday lecture and collected in the following Tuesday lecture. Alternatively all homework assignments can be obtained from the link above. Doing the homework is a fundamental part of the course work. Together with quizzes given in the recitations they will form a   recitation score which will count for 30% of the overall score.

Grading Policy: The overall score will be computed by the formula   30% Rec. Score + 20 % Each Midterm + 30% Final

Recitation Score: It will be obtained by giving weight 2 to the homowork sheets and weight 1 to quizzes given during recitations.

First Midterm Exam: 8:30pm to 10:00pm, February 25 (check the link above to find the place)

Second Midterm Exam: 8:30pm to 10:00pm, April 08 (check the link above to find the place)

Final Exam: 2:00pm to 4:30pm, May 16 (check the link above to find the place)

Turning Scores into Grades: In principle scores are turned into grades following the standard rule: above 90 = A, between 85 and 90 = A-, between 80 and 85 = B+ and so on until C- which is reached by the minimum score of 55. These requirements are not going to be raised, but they might be lowered depending on the curve. For example, if a student has a score of 87, this student is assured to have at least A- but he/she might end-up with A.
