Text:
Linear algebra and its applications (third edition) by Gilbert Strang, Saunders/Harcourt Brace College Publishing, 1988.
Plenty of problems and their solutions may be found in Schaum's Outline Series Linear Algebra by Seymour Lipschutz, McGraw-Hill.

Topics covered:
Vector spaces, linear transformations and matrices, systems of linear equations, determinants, diagonalization, inner product spaces and duality. We will cover Chapters 1-5 and parts of Chapters 6-8.
In week 2 you will receive a detailed tentative schedule for the entire semester, along with suggested problems for each section.

Prerequisite:
MAT 211 or equivalent

Homework:
Homework will be assigned in monday lectures for the current week. It is due the following monday when it will be collected before the lecture. A selection of the assigned homework problems will be graded by Saibal Ganguli (office MATH 2-112).

Grading:
Grades will be assigned on the following basis:
Homework 20\%, Midterms 20\% each, Final 40\%.

Exams:
Midterm I       Friday, February 19        8.20-9.15am in Physics P116
Midterm II      Friday, March 26            8.20-9.15am in Physics P116
Final Exam     Friday, May 7                   8.30-11.30am, covers all material

No make-up exams will be given:
If a midterm exam is missed because of a serious (documented) illness or emergency, the semester grade will be determined on the basis of the other work done in the course. Exams missed for other reasons get zero.

Special Needs:
If you have a physical, psychiatric, medical, or learning disability that could adversely affect your ability to carry out assigned course work, I urge you to contact the staff in the Disabled Student Services office (DSS), Room 133 Humanities, 632-6748/TDD. DSS will review your situation and determine, with you, what accomodations are necessary and appropriate. All information and documentation of disability is confidential.
