I play several instruments, none of them very well. My main interest right now is guitar. I play a Carvin DC127 solidbody electric through a Carvin SX-100 solid state amplifier. My goal is someday to play jazz at least decently well. However, I'm willing to attempt to play any type of music. Most of the songs I write myself come out more like folky or poppy tunes. (To see some of the lyrics for these, click here .) And anyone who has an electric guitar and doesn't turn it up a little every once in a while is missing out on a good portion of the fun!
I also play four other instruments: trumpet, recorder, flute, and trombone. Trumpet was my first instrument; I started in fourth grade and played until I left high school, and haven't played that much since then. Music wasn't as important to me then, so I didn't get as good as I might have. I've played recorder almost as long. It's fun, and never physically painful. Sometimes I hang out and play with a bunch of musicians (friends of my sister) called the Branslers who play medieval music, and of course the recorder comes in handy for that. I only began to play flute in Jan. '96, and trombone even more recently yet, so I'm not very accomplished yet.
I can sing too, and although that's never really been my favorite way to make music, it may be what I'm best at. Perhaps that's why it's never been my favorite: it amazes me to see and hear a really good guitar player for example, but singing always seemed like just singing, and how much was there really to it? You shouldn't take this to mean that I don't like to sing, though; in fact I like it a lot.
Recently I bought a low-end four track tape recorder, and I've been having a lot of fun playing with it and recording myself. Maybe even some of the stuff isn't that bad.
As far as "performing", pretty much the only things I do are in church: singing in choir and playing electric guitar.
