COURSE SYLLABUS FOR MAP 103:

Class Times: Tuesday and Thursday 6:50pm-8:10pm in Physics P117

Office Hours: Tuesdays 11:00am-12:00pm in the Math Learning Center and Tuesdays 4:30pm-6:30pm in my office in the math building, room 2-122 or by appointment.

Summary: This course provides a review of high school algebra with the aim of preparing students for calculus and other mathematics. Completion of this course satisfies the Basic Mathematics Competence requirement. Students who obtain a C or better can continue into any class in mathematics or statistics requiring a placement level of 3. This course does not satisfy the DEC C requirement for graduation. Nor does it count towards graduation credits.

Textbook: Intermediate Algebra by Miller, O'Neil and Hyde.

Course Structure: Coursework will be composed of homework, quizzes, midterms and a final exam. Assignments and further course information will be posted below so consult this page from time to time.

Homework: Homework will be assigned weekly and will not be collected.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given weekly. They will consist of 1 or 2 problems based on homework problems. The lowest 2 quiz grades will be dropped. Grade breakdown: 50%

Midterm 1: The first midterm will be given on February 25th at 8:30pm-10pm in the Earth and Space Science building, room 001. Grade breakdown: 15%

Midterm 2: The second midterm will be given on March 23rd at 8:30pm-10pm in the Earth and Space Science building, room 001. Grade breakdown: 15%

Final: The final will be given on May 11th at 8:30pm-11pm in the Stony Brook Union, room 123. Grade breakdown: 20%

Week 1: Do the following homework problems in the textbook. Section 5.1: #3,7,11,15,19,23,27,31,35,39,63. Section 5.2: #9,17,21,25,37,47,51,55,59,77,83,85. Your first quiz will be on Thursday 2/4 and will consist of 2 problems similar to these homework problems.

Week 2: Do the following homework problems in the textbook. Section 5.3: #27,31,35,39. Section 5.4: #17,21,31,51,59. Section 5.5: #9,15,35,41. Section 5.6: #43,59. Your second quiz will be on Tuesday 2/16 and will consist of 3 problems similar to these homework problems.

Announcement: Class will be held on Thursday 2/11 as usual.

Week 3: Do the following homework problems in the textbook. Section 5.8: #3,7,21,25,29,47,55. Section 6.1: #3,7,13,15,17,19,31. Section 6.2: #3,11,15,23,45. Section 6.3: #7,15,35,43,51,61. There will be no quiz this week. Class on Thursday 2/25 is cancelled since you will have your first midterm on that day.

My apologies for missing class on Tuesday. We'll have the quiz on Thursday 2/18.

Midterm 1 Practice Exam: Do this practice exam to review for the midterm on Thursday 2/25. We'll review in class on Tuesday 2/23.

Homework 4: Section 2.1: #5,7,9,11,15,17,19,21,23,25. Section 2.2: #12,14,16,18,20,22,24,26,28,30,32,34,36,42,46,48,51.

Quiz 3 will be given on Tuesday 3/9.

Homework 5: Section 2.3: #14,16,18,20,22,28,30,32,34,36,40,42,48. Section 2.4: #8,10,12,16,18,22,25,53,55,69,71,79.

Quiz 4 will be given on Tuesday 3/16. On both Tuesday 3/16 and Thursday 3/18 there will be a substitute teacher.

Midterm 2 Practice Exam: Do this practice exam to review for the midterm on Tuesday 3/23. I'll have extended office hours on Monday 3/22 from 3:30 to 6:30pm and we will have class on Tuesday 3/23 prior to the exam in case you have any questions and in order to do some last minute review.

Homework 6: Read Sections 4.1,4.2,4.3 in the text and do the following problems. Section 4.1: #3,5,7,9,11,13,17. Section 4.2: #2,3,4,5,7,9,11,13,17,23,33,37,55,63. Section 4.3: #11,17,19,31,39,45,55.

Quiz 5 will be given on Tuesday 4/13.

Homework 7: Read Sections 10.1,10.2,10.3,10.4 in the text and do the following problems. Section 10.1: #3,7,11,15,19,29,33,37,43. Section 10.2: #15,19,23,27,29,47,51. Section 10.3: #13,23,27,31,39,47,51,53. Section 10.4: #35,39,43,47,55,73.

Homework 8: Section 10.5: #23,27,35,52,56,65,69. Section 10.7: #37,39,53,60,74. Also do the following practice exam.

Final Practice Exam: Do this practice exam to review for the final. Once you've done every problem you may look at these solutions. Try not to look at the solutions until you have worked on all of the problems.
