MAT 118 - Mathematical Thinking
Fall 2005

Attention: Midterm 2 will be held in the lecture class on Friday November 11. It is 80 minutes long, from 12:50 to 2:10pm in Engineering Room 145.

Instructor: Andrew Clarke. Office: Math. Tower Rm. 3-103. Email: aclarke at math.sunysb.edu

Course Description:   There is much more to mathematics than just calculations and solving equations. In this course we will examine several mathematical topics that are accessible to students with an understanding of high school mathematics. We will cover material from the following topics: voting methods, the mathematics of money, probability, graphs, paths and networks, tilings and polyhedra, number theory.

Textbook:   The text for this course is Mathematics Beyod the Numbers, by G. Gilbert and R. Hatcher, published by John Wiley and Sons (2000). We will cover material from chapters 1,3,4,6,8. This is available from the university bookstore but I would look at prices online first.
