These NSF funded fellowships are open to juniors and seniors who wish to do research in the Department of Mathematics or of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. A student who is accepted into the program might take one or two preliminary courses and then spend a semester or summer doing a research project under the guidance of a VIGRE postdoctoral fellow or a faculty member in one of the Departments' research teams. Successful students may have their support extended for a second session, so that they can deepen their work. The final product of a student's participation in this project is a written report approved by the mentor. Students are also expected to participate in a VIGRE seminar related to their work.

Click here for a description of research options and here for an web application form.

All interested students are strongly encouraged to participate. NSF support is available for US citizens and permanent residents, at the rate of $2000 per summer and $1000 per academic year. Applicants should contact either Professor Irwin Kra or Professor Alan Tucker as soon as possible. The program started in Fall 2000 and is expected to continue for 5 years.
