Secondary Teacher Preparation Program
Information for Prospective Students
The Mathematics Secondary Teacher Preparation Program prepares students to be teachers of mathematics in the secondary schools. It currently satisfies all requirements for New York State provisional certification for teaching mathematics, grades 7 -- 12. The Program is administered by the Mathematics Department as part of Stony Brook's Professional Education Program.

More Information:

Admission to the Mathematics Secondary Teacher Preparation Program. Students must be officially signed in before they begin participating in the Program. Admission requirements are:
  • MAT or AMS major
  • Completion (each with a grade of C or better) of
    • Freshman Calculus (one of the sequences MAT 125-126-127, MAT 131-132, MAT 141-142, AMS 151-152),
    • Linear Algebra (MAT 211) or Applied Linear Algebra (AMS 210), and
    • Language, Logic and Proof (MAT 200)
    with an average for these courses of B or better.
  • Any exception to these requirements must be approved in advance by the Mathematics Department Teacher Education Committee. Student must submit to the Committee a full written explanation of the exception requested; copies of all relevant transcripts must be attached. Requests should be delivered to the Mathematics Undergraduate Office (P-144, Mathematics Building) and clearly marked "Attention: Teacher Education Committee."

Graduation from the Mathematics Secondary Teacher Preparation Program. Students must complete:
  • University graduation requirements
  • Requirements for MAT or AMS major
  • Special requirements for the program.
     Note: Although there is considerable overlap between the three sets of requirements, this is a very heavy program (the equivalent of a double major). It may require extra time to complete, especially for students who do not complete Freshman Calculus in their first year.
     Students interested in this program should contact the program director, if possible by the end of the freshman year, but at latest before registering for the junior year.

Language and DEC refer to the University's Language and Diversified Education Curriculum requirements. MAE447 is a 1-credit course.
