Ways to get around the web
- There are many sites which have indexes to information on the web.
Probably the most popular and comprehensive index is the Yahoo
list, but also useful is the Global
Network Navigator from O'Reilly. Good searching sites are Lycos
and Alta Vista; Acme
Labs provides an interface to many
search engines which search not only the WWW, but also telephone
directories, dictionaries, and other useful stuff. Also interesting is
the Virtual Tourist,
a map-based index to web servers by geographic location.
Mathematics
- Of great utility is MathSciNet,
which provides online access to Mathematical Reviews. Penn State
maintains an extensive list of mathematics
servers, which includes links to most math departments on the web,
as well as electronic journals and preprint servers. The Berlin Center
for Scientific Computing also keeps a very complete list
of electronic publications.
- Of particular interest is probably the American
Mathematical Society. Some knowledge of the history
of mathematics is a good thing for anybody interested in mathematics.
Other useful mathematical sites are the Math
Sources at U. Penn and the Math
Software Archives. Or, of course, there's the MathSoft
Unsolved Mathematics Problems page with (surprise) an ever-changing
list of unsolved problems. Also entertaining is David
Griffeath's Primordial Soup Kitchen and the Pi-server.
Other things
- A nice set of reference
items, including a dictionary, thesaurus, phone books, and so on
is kept by Inter-Links.
A summary of current
news headlines is available, and if you are considering actually
going outside at some point, you might want to get a current
weather report.
Some daily comics are at United
Media's Comics Page, including Dilbert.
Closer to Home
- You can look up phone numbers in the Stony
Brook Campus Phone Directory, or investigate Other
WWW Servers at StonyBrook. The USB
home page has general
information about USB, although that might not be obvious. And
Webscope provides some general
information about Long Island.
