Travel to College Park
The University of Maryland, College Park is located in College Park,
Maryland. The City of College Park is located four miles outside
Washington, D.C. You can reach the University by many routes.
BY CAR
FROM THE NORTH:
Take I-95 South to where it meets I-495 (The Capital Beltway).
Stay in the right center lane, and follow the signs marked
"College Park/Park-and-Ride". You will merge onto the Beltway for less
than 1/4 mile, when you will want to merge onto exit 5-A. Follow the
signs to U.S.1 (Baltimore Ave) and head south for 2 1/2 miles.
The University of Maryland will be on your right.
FROM THE SOUTH:
Take I-95 North to exit 5, College Park.
Get on Route 1 South.
The University of Maryland will be 2 1/2 miles south on your right.
FROM WASHINGTON:
Take Rhode Island Ave North out of the city.
Rhode Island Ave turns into U.S.1.
Continue north until you see the University on your left.
The Quality Inn is perhaps 1/2 mile south of the University campus,
at the third traffic light on Route 1 south of the campus.
The address of the Quality Inn is 7200 Baltimore Boulevard,
College Park MD, and its phone number is 301-864-5820.
BY TRAIN
Coming from the north, Amtrak stops at the Capital Beltway Station
in New Carrolton, and next at Union Station in D.C.
Getting off at Union Station, you can take Metrorail to the College
Park Station:
from Union Station Metrorail, take a red line train (marked Wheaton
or Silver Spring) to Fort Totten station; transfer to a green line
train (marked Greenbelt), get off at College Park station.
(You can also catch Metrorail at New Carrolton but the route to College
Park is less efficient.)
COLLEGE PARK METRORAIL STATION
At College Park Metrorail station, you are exactly 1/2 mile from the
Quality Inn. To walk there, exit the station on the west side. (This is the
direction which requires you to cross under some MARC train tracks next to
the station, and it is the direction in which one would walk to "downtown"
College Park or Route 1.) Walk west from the station on Calvert Road
(the main road, moving directly away from the station) for 1/2
mile to Route 1. The Quality Inn is across the street.
Alternately, you can catch a taxi at the main taxi stand for the station;
this is on the east (busy) side of the station (do not cross under the
MARC tracks). The taxi ride to the Quality Inn would now be 2-3 miles.
When classes are in session (Mon-Fri), the University of Maryland
shuttle service runs from the station to campus about every 20 minutes,
from 7:00 a.m. to 7:40 p.m. This shuttle is free for anyone. It leaves
the station, crosses Route 1 to the University; about 100 yards after
Route 1, on your right you will see a building with a grey slate dome.
That is the math building. There is a stop at the roundabout just ahead
at which you can exit the shuttle (and walk back to the math
department).
BY AIR
There are three airports serving the Washington area, listed below
with instructions for ground connections.
Dulles is the least convenient.
BWI is the best for driving connections or shuttle service.
National (D.C.) has the great advantage that one can get to College
Park on Metrorail, arriving 1/2 mile (on foot) from the Quality Inn.
CAVEAT:
--Metrorail's listed operating hours end at midnight. With the
transfers, the metrorail trip from National can take an hour.
--Dollar figures below are a year or two old.
National Airport:
You can walk to a Metrorail station across the parking
lots (or wait to take one of the frequent and free shuttles).
Take Metrorail to the College Park station.
(Take a yellow line train marked Mt. Vernon Square,
go to Gallery Place station; transfer to a red line train marked
Fort Totten, go to Fort Totten station; transfer to Green line
train marked Greenbelt, get out at College Park.)
See the algorithm for College Park station above.
BWI (Baltimore-Washington International Airport):
Airport Connection ($16 to College Park)
This is a reasonable two-stage airport-to-doorstep service.
A bus takes you to a satellite station not far from
College Park, where smaller vehicles take passengers
to their doorsteps. Sunday through Friday, the bus
from the airport leaves every 90 minutes from 7 AM
to 10 PM, then there is one last bus out at 11 PM;
on Saturday the buses depart only every
2 and 1/2 hours, from 7:30 AM to 8 PM.
BWI Airport Limousine Service ($47 to College Park)
The fee does not include driver's gratuity. (It also explicitly
excludes parking fees, but you will not have these at
the Quality Inn.) The driver will meet you at the airport
gate and assist at baggage claim. You have to call in
advance to make a reservation, 301-441-2345.
Taxi from BWI
A taxi group (Blue Bird Cab Co., 301-864-7700) gave me
the estimate "about $40" for a cab to the Quality Inn.
The Limo Service above gave essentially the same estimate for a
taxi (which competes with the limo) to College Park.
(more information: ground transportaiton desk at BWI:
410-859-7545)
Dulles Airport:
Take the Dulles Express shuttle from Dulles to the nearest
Metrorail station, West Falls Church (approx. 20 minute trip).
(The one-way fare for the Dulles Express shuttle is
$8, cash only. Shuttles leave the airport every 20-30
minutes, from 6AM to 10:30PM weekdays, from 7:30 AM to
10:30PM Sundays and holidays)
Take Metrorail to College Park.
(Take the orange line train to Metro Center, transfer to
a red line train marked Wheaton or Silver Spring; go to
Fort Totten station, transfer to a green line train marked
Greenbelt; exit at College Park.)
(This takes about one hour and costs $2 or $3.15 depending
on the hour.)
See the algorithm for College Park station above.
Alternately the Dulles taxi authority (703-661-8230) tells me that a
taxicab direct from the airport to College Park will cost $50-55.
DRIVING TO THE CONFERENCE
The Quality Inn is within easy walking distance of the conference,
which will be held on the third floor of the Mathematics Building
on the University of Maryland campus, in the department lounge and
colloquium room.
To drive to the conference, for example come south from the Beltway
on Route 1 as described above, passing Route 193 and several stop
lights. At one light, on the right will be a McDonald's. Then
you pass a Jerry's fast food place on your right. At the next light,
turn right onto Campus Drive, entering the campus. If you continued
straight on Campus Drive for 100-200 yards, you would be in front
of the Math Building, which is four stories and supports a large
gray slate dome. However, to park, continue as follows:
--on a weekend (or after 4PM)
Take the first right (after turning from Route 1), then take the
first right (leaving the road for a parking area), and park.
--on a weekday
After turning off 1, continue straight until you hit the traffic
circle, turn right there, take the next left into the parking garage
and park (and pay).
Coming up Route 1 from the South (e.g. from the Quality Inn), you
will pass a traffic light in front of the Quality Inn, a traffic light
at a shopping center, another light with a book store on a corner, and
two minor traffic lights. The next light has a left turn lane which you
take to turn onto Campus Drive. This is the turn described above from the
north. Now reduce to the previous algorithm for parking.
CHEZ BOYLE (Party, Fri. 7:30)
The address is 8710 23rd Avenue and the phone is 301-434-5298.
To get there:
>From the Quality Inn:
Drive south on Route 1 to the very next traffic light (at Guilford),
which has an Exxon station on the far right corner. Turn right.
When this road ends (at the third stop sign), turn left.
At the first serious intersection (the second stoplight),
turn right, onto Adelphi.
Almost immediately there is another stoplight--go straight
through, continuing on Adelphi.
Turn left at the next stoplight, onto Metzerott Road.
Take the second left, onto 23rd Avenue.
After 4 blocks, 23rd court hits 23rd Avenue from the left; opposite,
on the right side, is the Boyles' driveway (the larger house, on the
right side of the driveway, is the Boyles').
Park on the street (don't go up the driveway--not enough room).
The total drive from the Quality Inn is roughly perhaps 4 miles.
>From I-95, coming south from Baltimore:
exit onto 495 (the Beltway), going west toward Silver Spring and VA.
Take the New Hampshire exit going south (New Hampshire is the first
possible exit and the south exit is the second of the two exits onto
New Hampshire). Take a left onto Adelphi (the second light).
Take a right onto Metzerott (the second light).
Take the second left (onto 23rd Avenue).
Pick up the previous algorithm.
(I suggest: participants staying at the Quality Inn interested in
getting a ride to the Boyles' or willing to give one, rendezvous
in the Quality Inn check-in lobby 7:30-7:45 to join forces.)
