Global Analysis 30 Years Later

Midwest Dynamical Systems Seminar
March 25-28, 1998
University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH

Conference Organizers:
Christopher McCord, Patrick McSwiggen, Kenneth Meyer

This conference is a look back at one of the major events in the modern history of dynamics: the 1968 AMS Summer Mathematical Institute conference on Global Analysis. Our retrospective will the state of dynamics in 1968, the work that emerged from the 1968 conference, and the influence of that work on the subsequent thirty years of dynamics. The plenary speakers will include many of the participants of the 1968 conference.

Plenary Speakers: Stephen Smale, Mauricio Peixoto, Philip Boyland, John Franks, David Fried, Konstantin Mischaikow, Sheldon Newhouse, Morris Hirsch, Charles Pugh, Dave Richeson, Clark Robinson, Amie Wilkinson, Bob Williams, Lai-Sang Young

Sponsors: The conference is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, and the Charles Phelps Taft Memorial Fund. The conference is also the Spring 1998 meeting of the Midwest Dynamical Systems Seminar.

Registration: You do not need to register to participate in the conference. However, if you want to give a contributed lecture, or if you want to receive financial support, you do need to register. The preferred means of doing so is to use the registration forms on the conference web page . You can also call, write or e-mail, using the contact information at the end of this message.
Funding is limited, and priority will go to graduate students, new Ph.D.s and under-represented populations. Requests received by Jan. 1 will receive a response by Jan. 15; requests received by Feb. 1 will receive a response by Feb. 15. After that, requests for financial support can be made at the conference.

Local Information: Travel by car:
The main routes into Cincinnati are I-71 (from the northeast), I-74 (from the west) and I-75 (from the north and south). All pass fairly close to campus. The directions below are to get you from the interstates to campus.
>From I-71:
Take the William Howard Taft Road exit. Taft is one-way to the west. Stay on Taft until it comes to a T at Clifton Ave. Note that the name will change to Calhoun Street as you cross Vine Street. At Clifton, turn right. Campus will be on your right. The last drive into campus will be College Court. Turn right there and follow the road back to the Brodie Garage. The back of the Old Chemistry Building will be on your right as you enter the garage.
>From I-75:
Take the Hopple Street exit (north of the downtown, just south of the junction with I-74). Turn left at the light onto Hopple. You will now be travelling east. Cross over I-75. Follow the road up the hill. Note that the street changes names to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Follow M.L.King up the hill. At the top of the hill, you reach Clifton Avenue. Turn right onto Clifton. Campus will be on your left. The first drive into campus is College Court. Turn there and follow the road back to the Brodie Garage. The back of the Old Chemistry Building will be on your right as you enter the garage.
>From I-74:
Take I-74 until it terminates at I-75. Take I-75 South. Stay in the rightmost lane, and take the first exit -- Hoople Street. By Plane
Airfare Discounts:
Delta Airlines is the major air carrier to the Cincinnati Airport. Delta is offering discounts from 5% to 15% for conference participants. Discounts will be greater if bookings are made 60 days in advance, or if you are unable to stay over Saturday night. To take advantage of these fares, please contact Melissa Jones at The Travel Exchange at (800) 388-4734 or (513) 841-5595. You can also call Delta Airlines at (800) 241-6760. If you call Delta, refer to file number 106354A.

Ground Transportation
The Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport is located in Northern Kentucky. Unfortunately, there is no convenient public transportation from the Airport to campus. Other than renting a car, your options are:
Take a cab to campus. The ride will normally take about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic and construction and should cost about $35.
Take the Jetport Express bus to the downtown. At each baggage claim area is a Jetport booth. You can purchase a roundtrip ticket for $14, if you identify yourself as attending the conference. The bus will take you to the downtown hotels. From there you would have to catch a city bus to campus. Routes 17, 18 and 19 run past campus. You board these downtown on Sixth Street, between Vine and Walnut. Routes 43, 45 and 47 run to Readingand Oak. It is a 2 block walk from there to the Vernon Manor. You board these on Fifth Street, between Walnut and Main.
Call Door-to-Door Transportation at (800) 783-0088. A van for up to four people is $23 one way, for six people (the most they can take), it is $33.50. Call at least 24 hours in advance to reserve a van.
Other Airports
We are less than 2 hours away from a number of other regional airports including Louisville, Indianapolis, Columbus, Dayton, and Lexington. You might find airfares less expensive if you go through one of these locations, but you will need a car from there.

By Bus
The Greyhound Bus Station is located about 3 miles from the main UC campus. You will need to take a cab to campus. Cabs are usually located directly out in front of the bus station. If there is a shortage they may ask you to share the cab with another passenger. The cost is approximately $6 to campus and takes about 10 minutes.

Lodging:
We have blocks of rooms reserved for the conference at the following establishments. To obtain the conference rate, please be sure to identify yourself as part of the "Global Analysis 30 Years Later" Conference or the Midwest Dynamical Systems Seminar.
The Vernon Manor 400 Oak Street (513) 281-3300 The Vernon is a very impressive place in the Grand Hotel style. It is approximately a mile from campus, though not through the most affluent of neighborhoods. A single room is $82 plus tax, a double room is $92 plus tax. A shuttle service is also available between the hotel and the University. Note that the Vernon offers an online registration form, which can be accessed from the conference home page. To obtain the conference rates, please be sure to enter "Global Analysis 30 Years Later" in the "Additional Comments" section of their form.
The Travelodge 3244 Central Parkway (513) 559-1800 The Travelodge is approximately a mile and a half from the University. It is a stiff uphill walk from the motel to campus. Single rooms are $34 plus tax; double rooms are $38 plus tax. This is our "no frills" option.
The Omni Netherlands Plaza 5th & Race (800) 843-9100 A very nice Art Deco downtown hotel. More convenient from the Airport; less convenient to the University. Bus routes 17, 18 and 19 run from 6th & Vine (just a few blocks from the Omni) to the University. A single room is $75, a double room is $89. These rooms are subject to availability, so call early.
